Guwahati which was formerly known as Pragjyotishpur, Â is the capital city of Assam. It is the largest and the most developed city in the North East and is regarded as one of the fastest developing cities of India. Guwahati is considered as the gateway of North East.
The geographical area of the city stretches over more than 35 Kms (Thirty Five Kilometers). The Southern part of the city is situated on the bank of the river Brahmaputra and to the north, it lies in the foothills of Shillong. To the west, the physical map of the city stretches up to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and Narengi to the east.
The core area of the city consists of Paltan bazaar, Pan bazaar, Fancy bazaar,Â Ganeshguri, Â Maligaon, Beltola, Ulubari, Zoo Road Tiniali, Chandmari, etc. Paltan Bazaar is the main hub for transportation and hotels. A wide range of hotels right from lodges to international and Four Star hotels are available here. The soul of all types of transportation facilities originates from Paltan bazaar. Guwahati is linked to the other parts of the North East as well as with the whole country with railway facilities and in Paltan Bazar the largest railway junction of the North East is situated,. The railway of Assam falls under North East Frontier Railway.
Panbazar is the epicenter of all types of educational institutions and administrative offices. Guwahati High Court is situated at Panbazar and also the famous Cotton College. The city has also world class institution such as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Guwahati) and there exists one of the famous universities of India viz. Gauhati Universities, under which all the famous colleges of Guwahati are affiliated.
One of the other most notable places of Guwahati is Fancybazar, which is the main center for retail and wholesale trade of all sorts of products and services. A great number of retail commercials are carried on at places such as Ulubari, Chandmari, Hatigaon, Zoo Road Tiniali, etc. which also covers the major residential areas of the city.
G.S Road is the main corridor which crosses through the heart which is more than 15 Kms of length.Â A great number of large scale retail enterprises such as Big Bazaar, Vishal Megamart, Sohum, Pantaloons, Levis Outlets, Adidas Outlets, etc. are being profitably run in the city.
The main economic aspects of Guwahati city revolve around with trade, commerce, transport and services. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the city as calculated in 2010 is about One Billion Rupees.
The pace at which the upgradation of the city is growing, it will definitely result in forming ne of the most developed cities of the country.
